chordiology blog
Well, it was another night of FUN and singing (and, in this case, excellent BBQ ribs that fell right off from the bone)!
First off, for those not in-the-know, Uncle Sam Night takes place in Windsor, Ontario so crossing the border is required. But, in our case it got dicey crossing into Canada since at least one baritone (who shall remain nameless) thinks that "two pieces of ID" means your Michigan Driver's license and the equivalent of your Kroger's Plus Savings Card. With this lack of official documentation, the "Customs Lady" began grilling TR Gerard (mega-bass fill-in for Dave during his trip to NM), Rob, and me with questions. I was driving so I answered most of the questions.
"What is the purpose of your trip into Canada?"
"To sing Barbershop music at a barbershop night in Canada. We're a quartet. See, Chordiology Quartet is written on the backs of our jackets."
"Interesting that you're a 'quartet' especially given that there are only three of you."
"We're meeting the 4th member there. He's already arrived."
A skeptical looks comes back in reply.
"Ummmm, we could sing you something. Okay guys what are we going to sing? How's about Memphis Blues?" TR reminds us from the back seat that although he wanted to try singing that song with us at some point during the night, he's never sung it with us before this. "Well here's your chance. Sing it like your citizenship depended on it, or at least Rob's does (oops, I think I let the cat out of the bag).
We picked a key and let 'er rip.
First we were met with a look of suspicion.
Then the sternness started to wain.
When I saw her beginning to smile and tapping her pen on the window of the booth. I stopped and said "There you go."
We get through.
Evidently, the two forms of ID can also include a driver's license, a Kroger Plus Savings Card and a peppy barbershop swing tune. :)
Anyway, we arrived and it was just a great time from beginning to end. Before things even officially got kicked off you could meet people; sing in a pick-up quartet; sing a voice part in a pick-up quartet different from your own; have a beverage; listen to others sing; laugh at jokes being told, et cetera.
But once the program got started, the incomparable Doran McTaggart was in charge. He makes every event a riot! He had it set up so that every registered chorus, unregistered-ad-hoc choruses, mini-choruses, mega-quartets (more than 4 members) and quartets alike all got to sing. It was so much fun. He even had a "mix-'em-up" chorus competition that allowed everyone in the place to sing. You had about 20 guys in your "mix-'em-up" group and you had to pick a name for your group, pick a song and rehearse that song that was going to be sung in the contest that was to take place in 6 minutes. This whole "Kangaroo Court" contest was such a huge success Doran plans on taking it global in the next year.
We closed out the official part of the night and closed with "What'll I Do" (again with TR on bass). It was so fun!
Afterward, we did exactly what Chordiology loves to do and sang tags and songs with all kinds of people. Singing With Dad and Moxxy were there as well and each of the quartets were all singing with others. Later, there were people jumping in and singing with Chordiology while one or another card-carrying Chordiologist sat out. What fun! Hey, while we're speaking of that, let this be an open invitation to anyone who ever wants to sing a song or a tag with us. We LOVE singing with people.
Anyway, it was everything that you would have hoped for in a night of fun and singing. If you didn't get to sing then ........... simply put, you weren't there. So make sure to be there next time and don't forget your Kroger Plus Savings Card. :)
